Why Stillness Is One of the Most Powerful Spiritual Disciplines

We Live in a World That Rarely Stops

Our phones buzz.

Our calendars stay full.

Our minds race from one responsibility to the next.

Many of us have become so accustomed to constant noise that silence feels uncomfortable.

Yet throughout Scripture, we see a very different rhythm.

Jesus often withdrew from the crowds.

He stepped away from the demands of ministry.

He sought quiet places.

He prayed.

He listened.

Stillness wasn't an escape from His purpose, it prepared Him for it.

I've come to believe that stillness isn't simply a healthy habit.

It's one of the most powerful spiritual disciplines we can cultivate.

Stillness Creates Space for God

Many people ask me why I incorporate quiet moments into my wellness experiences.

The answer is simple.

When life becomes loud, it's difficult to notice the gentle ways God often speaks.

God is always speaking, stillness doesn't force God to speak.

It simply removes some of the distractions that keep us from hearing Him.

Psalm 46:10 reminds us:

"Be still, and know that I am God."

Notice that the invitation begins with stillness.

Not activity.

Not striving.

Stillness.

Jesus Modeled a Life of Retreat

One of the things I admire most about Jesus is that He never seemed rushed.

Crowds followed Him everywhere.

People constantly needed something from Him.

Yet He regularly withdrew.

Luke tells us that Jesus often went to lonely places to pray.

Before major decisions…

After performing miracles…

Following long days of ministry…

He intentionally stepped away.

If the Son of God made room for quiet, perhaps we should too.

Stillness Is Not Doing Nothing

Some people hear the word "stillness" and imagine inactivity.

That's not what I'm describing.

Stillness is an intentional posture of becoming present before God.

It may include:

  • Prayer

  • Worship

  • Scripture

  • Journaling

  • Reflection

  • Gratitude

  • Silence

  • Deep breathing

  • Listening

It isn't about emptying ourselves.

It's about becoming attentive.

We Cannot Hear Every Whisper in a Storm

Have you ever noticed how difficult it is to hear a quiet voice in a noisy room?

Our spiritual lives can be the same way.

We often ask God for direction while simultaneously filling every moment with podcasts, television, scrolling, conversations, and constant activity.

Sometimes the greatest obstacle isn't that God isn't speaking.

It's that we've become too distracted to recognize His voice.

Stillness doesn't make God louder.

It simply makes us more attentive.

Rest Is Not Laziness

Our culture often celebrates busyness as a badge of honor.

We're praised for working longer.

Doing more.

Producing more.

Achieving more.

Yet from the very beginning, Scripture introduces us to the rhythm of work and rest.

God Himself rested.

Not because He was tired.

Because rest is part of healthy creation.

I've learned that rest isn't something we earn after accomplishing everything on our to-do list.

It's something we intentionally choose because God designed us to need it.

Wellness Begins Within

Many people think wellness begins with what we eat or how often we exercise.

Those things certainly matter.

But true wellness reaches deeper.

It begins with our relationship with God.

Our thoughts.

Our emotions.

Our ability to be present.

Our willingness to slow down enough to notice what is happening within us.

Sometimes healing begins simply by sitting quietly long enough to acknowledge what we've been carrying.

Why I Value Quiet Moments

Whether I'm leading a sound bath, guiding meditation, journaling, or simply sitting alone with a cup of tea, my goal isn't to escape reality.

It's to become more aware of God's presence within it.

Every wellness experience I facilitate includes moments of intentional quiet because I believe transformation often happens there.

Not because silence has power.

Because God does.

Stillness simply creates room for us to become more aware of Him.

Creating Space in Everyday Life

You don't need an entire weekend retreat to practice stillness.

Start small.

Maybe it's five quiet minutes before checking your phone.

Maybe it's sitting outside with your morning coffee.

Maybe it's lighting a candle after work and spending a few moments in prayer.

Maybe it's opening your journal before bed.

Small moments practiced consistently often become life-changing rhythms.

An Invitation

If your life has felt rushed...

If your mind feels constantly occupied...

If your soul feels tired...

Perhaps what you need isn't another productivity strategy.

Perhaps you simply need permission to slow down.

To breathe.

To pray.

To listen.

To rest.

Stillness isn't about withdrawing from life.

It's about becoming fully present to the One who gives life.

Final Thoughts

At The Koko Bella, every gathering is designed with this in mind.

Not to help you escape your life...

But to help you return to it more grounded, more peaceful, and more aware of God's presence.

In a world that constantly demands more of us, stillness becomes an act of trust.

Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is simply be still.
