The Coffee Shop
Maya sat in the corner of the coffee shop pretending to read.
The same page had been open for nearly twenty minutes.
She wasn't reading.
She was replaying conversations.
The one she wished she had.
The one she wished she never had.
The one she kept imagining would somehow turn out differently if she thought about it long enough.
Outside, people hurried past the window.
Inside, her coffee had gone cold.
She reached for her phone.
Again.
No new messages.
She sighed.
Across the room, an older woman quietly stirred honey into her tea.
She wasn't scrolling.
She wasn't wearing headphones.
She simply sat there...
looking out the window.
Peacefully.
It almost irritated Maya.
How could someone be that still?
A few minutes passed before the woman smiled and caught her eye.
"Busy mind?"
Maya laughed.
"Is it that obvious?"
The woman nodded.
"I've noticed something."
"What's that?"
"We spend so much time asking God to change our circumstances that we rarely ask Him to change us."
The words landed heavier than Maya expected.
She looked down into her untouched coffee.
The older woman continued.
"I used to think peace would come after life settled down."
She smiled softly.
"It never did."
"What changed?"
"I stopped waiting for quiet."
"I started becoming quiet."
Silence settled between them.
Not awkward.
Comfortable.
The kind that didn't need to be filled.
For the first time that morning...
Maya wasn't trying to solve her life.
She wasn't rehearsing tomorrow.
She wasn't reliving yesterday.
She simply breathed.
When she finally looked back across the room...
The chair was empty.
The woman had quietly left.
On the table where she'd been sitting was a folded napkin.
Curiosity pulled Maya from her seat.
She picked it up.
Written neatly across the front were six simple words.
"Be still, and know that I am God."
No name.
No explanation.
Just the verse.
Maya smiled.
Maybe God had answered her prayer.
Just not the way she'd expected.
Reflection
Sometimes we're so focused on asking God to change what's around us that we forget He's also shaping what's within us.
What if peace isn't something we find...
What if it's Someone we learn to remain with?
The Holy Girl Chronicles Because sometimes truth is best remembered through a story.
